7 days of Records Challenge by ME

Updated: Dec 1, 2019

I freaking LOVE all those social media challenges that come up now and again that encourage us to post about our favorite band or music for a week. I’ve done my fair share of them. However, I noticed that a lot of these challenges ask the very same questions. So I kept posting about the same records that I own. I own about 100 records now (and I listen to all of them!), and I was sad that I didn’t get to feature other records that I own that are super unique. A lot of these vinyl challenges ask us to post about our favorite or most listened to albums. I have never seen a vinyl challenge that makes us associate our record collection with a particular emotion, theme, or idea. So that’s what I set out to do. With that, I came up with the following seven questions/prompts:

  1. First record I ever owned

  2. Record with a story behind the purchase

  3. Best sounding record (quality)

  4. Best looking record

  5. Record to set the mood

  6. TGIF record

  7. Record most listened to

Some of these were really easy to answer. Some, I had to really think about for a minute or two. I have included pictures of all seven records I picked as well as my answers to these prompts. You can also see the original posts I made on Facebook and Instagram.

First record I owned: The Hunger Games Soundtrack

The first record I ever owned was the soundtrack to the Hunger Games movie. It was a gift from my brother. It features amazing artists including Punch Brothers, The Secret Sisters, and Taylor Swift. This album means a lot to me since it first got me into the world of vinyl.

Record with a story behind the purchase: Fred Astaire & Ginger Rodgers, Shall We Dance

I bought this album while I was traveling through Europe with my friends. While we were visiting Bath, England, we decided to stop inside a vintage store. I noticed they had records and I decided to check out their collection. This record caught my eye and I knew I had to get it. It was only two pounds, so if it did not survive my travels or was scratched it was not like I would have lost a lot of money. It SURVIVED and sounds great!

Best sounding record you own (quality): Monana Soundtrack

This is crazy, but Disney's Moana soundtrack sounds beautiful on vinyl. It is super clear, like stepping into a pure ocean and seeing your toes in the sand. Yes, that’s what it sounds like.

Best Looking Record: She and Him, Volume 3

This was a tough one! I thought I was going to pick one of my limited edition records but decided to go with the classic color. This vinyl is jet black and super glossy. I just love it. Can’t go wrong with classic.

Record to Set The Mood: Julian Lage, Arclight

The lights are dim. I have a glass of expensive wine. I put this album on by Julian Lage every time I want to set the mood, I play this record. It’s amazing.

TGIF: Ariana Grande, thank u, next

This Ariana Grande is the best record to celebrate the start of the weekend. Whether I’m getting ready to go out on the town or having a night in with a glass of wine and doing my nails, this is the record I play.

Record Listened to the Most: Julie Fowlis, Every Story

This album by Julie Fowlis is one of my favorites. Julie’s voice always makes me feel like I’m safe at home. No matter which country I’m visiting, the moment I play this album, I feel like I’m back in my house listening to this record. I play this record at least once a week.

What I learned from this experience: It made me listen to some records that I have not listened to in a while. I also enjoyed thinking about my records in not just a musical way (if that makes sense!). What I loved about this experience was that it started a discussion! A lot of friends and vinyl lovers would comment on my posts saying things like, “woah! I didn’t know you owned this record!” or “I’ve never heard of this band! I’ll have to check them out.” It was great seeing social media and music joining forces to bring people together to talk about common interests.

I hope you enjoy! I also hope you decide to try this challenge. Even if you don’t own vinyl, please feel free to join in. Just remember to use #7DaysOfRecords so I can follow you!
